Asavari’s Smile- A Gift for a Lifetime

A smile is more than a gift. It’s an expression that brings inner peace and joy. Many unfortunates are deprived of this smile. However, we at Mission Smile strive to transform their lives through a gift of a smile. Here’s an impact story of a six-month-old girl named Asavari. Her innocent eyes and cheerful nature captured our team’s attention during our Goa Mission (12-16 Nov’17).

Asavari lives in a small village. The place is ‘Hirkani Wadi’ of the Raigarh district of Maharashtra. Mahesh & Karuna Bai, Asavari’s parents, were completely shattered to see their first-born with cleft lip deformity. Unaware of this deformity, they became confused about where to go and what to do!

Due to her cleft lip, Asavari faced difficulty in eating. She could feed adequately fed. Hence she received fewer nutrients. Also, her health condition deteriorated. Gradually she became a victim of malnutrition. Since her health worsened, the anxious parents rushed to several hospitals. They hoped for recovery. However, the whopping expense delivered a fatal blow to their hope. Their relatives and neighbours weren’t of much support either. In fact, they would refer to Asavari’s cleft deformity to be ominous. The result of a divine curse inflicted upon her parents due to their evil deeds.

Mahesh (Asavari’s father) is a daily wager and help others in firming and other household works. He earned Rs. 4000 per month in 2017. So it became more difficult for them to get the operation done in a private hospital. In the meantime, Asavari turned six months (November 2017). Her parents saw a banner advertisement about Mission Smile’s free surgical camp. The site for the camp was Manipal Hospital. It was held in partnership with Muthoot Pappachan Foundation.

In the meantime, one of the branch officials from Muthoot Fincorp Ltd got hold of the family. He arranged their transportation to visit Manipal Hospital to screen Asavari. Asavari’s parents readily agreed to our suggestions. They immediately took her to the Mission Smile’s camp to receive her surgery. We noticed gratitude in their eyes when they saw Asavari’s new smile after successful cleft-repair surgery. She got the gift of a smile!

We salute the team’s spirit for restoring another beautiful smile. They helped a needy family get back on foot from the eternal tides of curses, ridicules and social stigma. With every smile and with every effort Mission Smile is changing the lives of many!

Please help us by bringing more smiles to children like Asavari. DONATE to Mission Smile.
