Restoring Little Fatima’s Smile – Impact Story from GC4

At Mission Smile’s – Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre, we have come across hundreds of children. They were born with cleft deformities to parents who were unaware that cleft lip and palate are treatable. Through our holistic endeavour, we have been bringing smiles to hundreds of cleft children and adults in the North East. We have been  creating cleft awareness and providing free cleft surgery as well as associated treatment.

The families of those affected by cleft deformities usually feel shy. In fact, They do not want to come out and speak about the transformation that their sons or daughters have undergone. This is even when their children have healed completely. After all, they fear social seclusion and rejection. However, there are exceptions. One such exceptional story had come to us from Mrinal Hossen. He is the father of Fatima Begum (4 years).

Eventually, Mr Hossen communicated with us on our Facebook page. He shared his daughter Fatima’s heartwarming photos. Good to see Fatima, now a bit grown up from when we saw her last during her cleft surgery at Agartala earlier this year. Mr. Hossen wanted us to share his daughter’s transformation with all. Also, he thanked Mission Smile for all that we have done for his daughter. In fact, Fatima has healed completely and is now very much like little girls of her age. Also, she is going to school and enjoying childhood bliss.

Fatima is from the Karbook block in the Gomati district of Tripura. She had bilateral cleft lip and palate deformities. In Fact her first surgery for correcting the bilateral cleft lip was conducted in the May 2016 Outreach Camp. The cleft palate was repaired in the Outreach Camp in March 2017. Both the camps were conducted at the Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital of Tripura Medical College in Agartala. This was in partnership with the Government of Tripura and NHM-Tripura.

Post-operative care and timely check-up are essential parts of the healing up’ process. Our doctors and counsellors instructed Fatima’s parents to take good care of her. They provide her with nutritious food and accompanied her to future check-ups. This followed the surgeries on both occasions. Thankfully, the parents, too, were equally supportive. As a result, Fatima’s transformation was visible in just a few months. Now, the proud family is happy beyond words! We wish Fatima all the best.

At Mission Smile, we’re continually striving towards bringing more and more smiles to children. These children suffer from cleft lip and cleft palate deformities across India. Fatima is just one among thousands we have gifted smiles. With ‘your’ help, many more child can re-discover life and ‘smile’ back at the world with confidence.
