Smile is more than a gift, it’s an expression that brings inner peace and joy. While there are many unfortunates who are deprived of it, we at Mission Smile strive to transform their lives through a gift of smile. Here’s an impact story of a six-month old girl child named Asavari whose innocent eyes and cheerful nature captured the attention of our team during the recently concluded Goa Mission (12-16 Nov’17).
Asavari lives in a small village ‘Hirkani Wadi’ of Raigarh district of Maharashtra. Mahesh & Karuna Bai, Asavari’s parents were completely shattered to see their first-born with cleft lip deformity. Unaware of this deformity, they were completely confused as where to go and what to do!
Due to her cleft lip, Asavari faced difficulty in eating. As she could not be fed properly, she received less nutrients and her health condition deteriorated, gradually turning her into a victim of malnutrition. Since her health worsened, the anxious parents rushed to several hospitals with the hope of recovery but the whopping expense delivered a fatal blow to their hope. Their relatives and neighbors weren’t much supportive either; in fact, they would refer Asavari’s cleft deformity to be ominous and the result of a divine curse inflicted upon her parents as a result of their bad deeds.
Mahesh (Asavari’s father) is daily wager and help others in firming and other household works. He earns Rs. 4000 per month, so it became more difficult for them to get the operation done in a private hospital. In the mean time when Asavari turned 6 months (November, 2017), they saw a banner advertisement about Mission Smile’s free surgical camp being organized in Manipal Hospital by in partnership with Muthoot Pappachan Foundation.
In the meantime, one of the branch officials from Muthoot Fincorp Ltd got hold of the family and arranged their transportation to visit Manipal Hospital to be screened by the Mission team. Asavari’s parents readily agreed to our suggestions and immediately took her to the Mission Smile’s camp where she received her surgery. Their gratitude and satisfaction were instantly noticed when they saw Asavari’s new smile after a successful cleft-repair surgery. She was reborn with the gift of smile!
We salute the team’s spirit for restoring another beautiful smile and helping a needy family get back on foot from the unending tides of curses, ridicules and social stigma. With every smile, with every touch, with every effort, with every hope, Mission Smile is changing the lives of many!
