The team members of Mission Smile’s Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre (GC4) that conduct the Nutrition Program participated in the Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony of National Rural Health Mission, Assam. The ceremony took place at the GMC Auditorium, Guwahati on 8th April 2018.
An exhibition was organized at the event venue, where Mission Smile participated and our team members distributed leaflets and booklets to the attendees to help spread awareness on the importance of nutrition for cleft patients.
Nutrition training is one of the vital parts of our Mission Smile’s Comprehensive Cleft Care Program. One of the common challenges faced by the parents of cleft children is their difficulty in feeding their babies. Most parents don’t know the proper feeding positions for cleft babies. Unable to satiate their child’s nutritional requirement, cleft babies often become victims of malnutrition. As malnourished cleft children cannot be operated upon, they have to undergo our nutrition programme and only after recuperating from malnourishment, they become fit and are selected for cleft rectification surgery.
Since most of the beneficiaries who come to GC4 belong to Assam and the North Eastern states, the nutrition diet for cleft babies advised in the booklet and leaflets, distributed at the exhibition, is mostly based on the traditional and nutritious Assamese food, which the attendees took a special interest in.
