KC4 Starts Nutrition Program

Our Kolkata Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre (KC4) has reached a new high. It conducted its first ever ‘Nutrition Program’ on the 9th of July 2018.

Malnutrition is a common ailment in cleft babies. Statistics show that 1 in every 10 malnourished cleft child does not even reach their first birthday. Due to cleft lips and palate deformities, a cleft afflicted child face severe feeding problems, which often leads to malnutrition. Surgery is the only treatment to rectify cleft lip and palate deformities. However, due to malnourishment, cleft surgeries gets cancelled. Only after a cleft child recovers from malnourishment to good health, cleft rectification surgery is done, subjected to confirmation of other health parameters as well.

To combat malnutrition, the mother of a cleft child must receive complete guidance and training from nutrition experts to feed her cleft baby properly and provide necessary emotional support and care till her child becomes fit for surgery. Keeping this in view at our Kolkata Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre (KC4), we have started the ‘Nutrition Program’, and on the first day of the nutrition program (9th July 2018), our team has screened 50+ patients.

Nutrition Program is one of our Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre (GC4). So far, we have helped over a thousand cleft children recover from malnutrition and made them fit for surgery. In fact, the 1000th patient from our Nutrition Program at GC4 successfully underwent cleft lip surgery in Oct 2016!

The starting of the Nutrition Program at KC4 has undoubtedly strengthened our activity offerings in West Bengal. We look forward to carrying on with this program in the future to help malnourished cleft children from economically weak backgrounds embrace the ‘gift of a smile’.
