Our first encounter with Mamun Mondal from village Malidah in Bagdah, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, was during one of our pre-screening camps earlier this year. 9 years 10 months old Mamun is like any other boy of his age. The only difference being Mamun had been a victim of both cleft lip and cleft palate from birth. Although Mamun’s parents managed to get their little boy operated on his cleft lip when he was just 6 months old, since then superstitions and ignorance of his family hold them back from conducting the cleft palate surgery which left the boy deprived and dejected.
Much like his two older siblings, Mamun too was admitted to a school where he now studies at class IV. But, due to his palate deformity, he faced difficulty in speaking since birth. His speech was almost 90% unclear and hence he couldn’t socialize freely with his classmates without feeling ashamed. While talking to his parents, Majnu Mondal (father) and Rakhima Mondal (mother), we came to know that the boy was rarely allowed to socialize with others of his age. The little boy thus had suffered depression; as a result, there was gradual deterioration in his academic grades.
After being brought to our Kolkata Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre (KC4), he was immediately screened by our specialist and was scheduled for surgery. He underwent cleft palate surgery on 3rd April 2018. Post recovery, he will be given free speech therapy by our therapist volunteer. Mamun will surely embrace life in all its fullness in the coming days’ thanks to the donors whose contributions help us in supporting the costly surgery and therapies we offer free of cost to the needy children like Mamun.
