With the proactive support from TATA Trust and their board, Mission Smile Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre (GC4) at Guwahati has become a state-of-the-art Centre in comprehensive cleft care in India and world wide. It provides free world class treatment to people born with Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate and other Facial Deformities. Since it went live on May 9, 2011, it has provided over 16,000 surgeries and services to not only the state of Assam but also other North Eastern States.

The partnership with Tata Trust started from January 2009 with the 1st International Mission which was totally funded by Tata Trust – it was this commitment from Tata Trust to support 50% of cost of surgery going forward which was instrumental in forging the partnership with the Government of Assam who agreed to support remaining 50% of the surgical cost for the Missions from May 2009 onwards. Tata Trust also supported cost of equipment for GC4 to the tune of Rs. 1 crore as well as buying equipment for Missions for 10 tables to be run simultaneously as was done during the 500 patient Missions in Assam and the 1000 patient Mission where we ran on an average 16 tables on a daily basis providing surgery to a total of 967 patients spread over 10 days of surgery.

The centre has earned the distinction of being the largest centre of its kind built through a Private-Public-Partnership with the Government of Assam through National Health Mission, Sir Dorabjee Tata Trust and Allied Trusts and Mission Smile. International medical volunteers from over 20 different countries have visited and attended its programmes till date.

Apart from providing free comprehensive surgery and care to Cleft children and Adults, it also serves as a tranaing and research centre for Surgeons and Anaesthetists in Cleft Care procedures for a developing country like India. These programmes of the centre are well known in the medical fraternity and attracts national and international surgeons and anaesthetists for the Fellowship.

Tata Trust have also funded Missions in – Jamshedpur, Bolpur, Kolkata, Sikkim, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar,  Vijaywada, Aurangabad, and Centres at Kolkata, Aurangabad, Nagercoil, Jamshedpur, Bhubaneswar and Ahmedabad.

This journey and success of our partnership has been possible due to the robust support from Tata Trust and the Government of Assam in our vision of ‘A Cleft Free’ India. We are very glad that Mr. R. K Krishnakumar visited and appreciated our Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre. What he said inspires us to become better.

“Inspirational to visit this hospital here again after a gap of some years. Superb maintenance so it is clean and cheerful. There is clearly a soul of goodness present here. Honored to visit”
