Restoring Little Fatima’s Smile – Impact Story from GC4

At Mission Smile’s – Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre, we have come across hundreds of children – born with cleft deformities to parents who were unaware that cleft lip and palate is treatable. Through our holistic endeavour – creating cleft awareness and providing free cleft surgery as well as associated treatment, we have been bringing smiles to hundreds of cleft children and adults in the North East.

The families of those affected by cleft deformities usually feel shy to come out and speak about the transformation that their sons or daughters have undergone (even when their children have healed completely) fearing social seclusion and rejection. However, there are exceptions. One such exceptional story has come to us recently from Mrinal Hossen – father of Fatima Begum (4 years). Mr Hossen communicated with us on our Facebook page recently and shared the heart-warming photos of his daughter Fatima, now a bit grown up from when we saw her last during her cleft surgery at Agartala earlier this year. He wanted us to share his daughter’s transformation with all and thanked Mission Smile for all that we have done for his daughter! Fatima has healed completely and is now very much like little girls of her age going to school and enjoying the bliss of childhood.

Fatima is from Karbook block in Gomati district of Tripura. She had bilateral cleft lip and palate deformities. Her first surgery for correcting the bilateral cleft lip was conducted in the May 2016 Outreach Camp and the cleft palate was repaired in the Outreach Camp in March 2017. Both the camps were conducted at the Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital of Tripura Medical College in Agartala in partnership with the Government of Tripura and NHM-Tripura.

Post-operative care and timely check-up is essential part of the ‘healing up’ process. Fatima’s parents were instructed by our doctors and counselors to take good care of her, provide her with nutritious food and accompany her to future check-ups following the surgeries on both occasions. Thankfully, the parents too were equally supportive and as a result Fatima’s transformation was visible in just a few months. Now, the proud family is happy beyond words! We wish Fatima all the best.

At Mission Smile we’re constantly striving towards bringing more and more smiles to children affected with cleft lip and cleft palate deformities across India. Fatima is just one among thousands we have gifted smiles. With ‘your’ help many more child can re-discover life and ‘smile’ back at the world with confidence.
