In May 2014, we approached Shri PC Pankaj, Chairman cum Managing Director of NEEPCO Ltd at the company head office in Shillong with a proposal – to support the cause of cleft in the state of Meghalaya.
The Guwahati Comprehensive Cleft Care Centre of Mission Smile was working in partnership with the Government of Meghalaya to provide free and quality comprehensive cleft care. The funding support from the Meghalaya state government and National Health Mission, though generous, was not sufficient to meet the costs of the care that was being provided. It was against this background that we met to request Shri Pankaj to supplement the government’s effort in cleft care.
By September-end, we received the happy news that NEEPCO was ready to supplement the cost of 120 surgeries. For a state like Meghalaya, in which we planned about 250 surgeries per year, this was indeed a substantial support and we went ahead with great gusto.
We decided to observe a NEEPCO Week in our Centre at Guwahati between January 19- 25, 2015, and requested CMD Shri Pankaj to inaugurate the Week. The Inauguration was covered enthusiastically by the media, and all major newspapers including The Hindu, The Telegraph and The Times of India, The Assam Tribune, Axomiya Pratidin, gave good coverage to the event.
Between September 2014 and April 2015, one hundred and twenty patients received transformation in their lives through support of NEEPCO. These were not just 120 patients; these were 120 families whose lives along with their communities were touched by the support provided by NEEPCO.
